The Butch Lewis Community Conversation

Shirley Sherrod, a civil rights leader and author of The Courage to Hope, will be participating in two Butch Lewis Community Conversation events in April. Sherrod made national news in 2010 after being targeted by Breitbart and Fox News, and was subsequently forced out of her job as Georgia director of the USDA by the Obama administration. Sherrod will speak at Hartford Public Library (500 Main Street) at 6:00PM on Tuesday, April 10th.  Click the following link to see information for this event: https://www.facebook.com/events/553986541634205/

On Wednesday, April 11th @ from 3:00 – 4:30, Sherrod will be participating in a panel discussion on the topic of the community land trust (CLT) model of ownership. In the late 60’s Sherrod and her husband Charles, co-founder of the Student Non-Violent Coordinating Committee, founded New Communities, a collective farm in Georgia considered the first community land trust in the US. The panel will describe the CLT model and how it might help preserve and create longterm affordable homeownership opportunities in Hartford and elsewhere in Connecticut. The panel discussion will be held in the community room at the Wilson-Gray YMCA at 444 Albany Avenue.
